SECURITY INFORMATION:

Certification Program
BMW ensures that every BMW 7 Series Protection Car meets the standards for the U.S. National Institute of Justice (NIJ) ballistic testing standards protection level IIIA. To achieve this certification the BMW 7 Series Protection Car must be able to withstand armed attack from handguns up to .44 Magnum caliber or 9mm submachine gun.

Ballistics
In a secured location at the Armored Car assembly area, specialists test the composite security glass to verify resistance to direct hits by rounds up to and including .44 Magnum caliber. The body of the BMW 7 Series Special Production Vehicle is also rigorously tested. Over 120 shots are fired from .44 Magnum and .357 Magnum caliber handguns at 45° and 90° angles into glass and metal surfaces from a distance of 5 meters (16.4 feet), which is when a bullet reaches its maximum velocity.

Run-flat Tires
These special tires can continue traveling regardless of low tire pressure. Even if the tires are fully deflated, you can drive 15 miles or more (depending on road conditions) at up to 50 mph. Plus, an onboard monitoring system can display the pressure in all tires on an in-dash readout.

Composite Security Glass
The windshield and windows are composed of layers of glass and inpact-resistant polymers. Unique to BMW, this bullet-resistant (up to .44 Magnum) Security Glass offers highly effective protection against unwanted intrusions. Adding to this security, a patented glass-steel composite reinforces the edges of all four windows. The glass is amazingly distortion free, and looks completely like normal glass until you power down the front windows and see that they are about 1 inch thick.

Integrated Armor Plating
Special armor-steel plating has been integrated into the structure of the car in critical areas.

Overlapping System
To help make even critical zones safer, the meticulously tested overlapping system at all four doors is designed to substantially reduce the possibility of bullets passing through the door and window seams and into the passenger compartment.

Aramide
Aramide® is a unique, lightweight fiber that is highly resistant to penetration by bullets and other foreign objects. In BMW Protection cars, special Aramide fiber plates are placed in the doors and rear sections of the passenger compartment, as well as in the roof and foot well areas.

Self-sealing Fuel Tank
If this optional fuel tank is punctured, a special exterior coating on the tank, designed to reseal the hole caused by splinters in seconds, is automatically activated.

Enhanced Suspension
The suspension, springs and shock absorbers on the BMW 7 Series Protection Car are tuned and the rear axle is made with reinforced steel to maintain ride comfort despite the added weight of the armor.

Dedicated Guard Production
Rather than retrofit an existing car, BMW builds each armored car from the ground up. The body structure comes from the standard assembly line to a dedicated armored car production area. A specially trained team of experts hand-integrates special armor-steel plating and composite security glass with reinforcements to the structure and suspension. This is where protection is built into the BMW armored cars - the kind of protection only possible with factory armoring.
